The Minister of Digital Transformation, Stefan Andonovski, today in Kocani stated that digital transformation must be implemented evenly and reach every municipality and every citizen, through concrete and practical projects that directly improve everyday life.
At the promotional event for the WiFi4WB – WiFi for the Western Balkans initiative, which was held at the “Beli Mugri” Theatre, the Minister emphasized that the goal is to ensure better digital connectivity precisely where citizens move, learn, work and socialize daily– in public spaces such as squares, parks, libraries, schools and cultural institutions.
In his address, Minister Andonovski emphasized:
“When I was here before, we talked about the need for Kocani to receive free internet zones , and we clearly stated that this region would be among our priorities. Today, with the support of our friends, we are turning that into action.
What we promised – as many times before – we are delivering.
With the WiFi4WB initiative, we are providing free public Wi-Fi in 64 municipalities across the country. This means free internet access in public spaces – squares, parks, libraries, schools and cultural institutions – where citizens need connectivity the most.
This is not just a convenience. This is a tool for equal opportunities:
for easier access to digital services and information,
for supporting learning and education,
for helping local businesses and a better experience for visitors,
and most importantly – for reducing the digital divide and greater social inclusion.”
The Minister pointed out that such projects are part of the broader commitment of the institutions to ensure that digital services and opportunities are equally accessible, regardless of whether citizens live in Skopje or in smaller municipalities.
During the event, also the Mayor of the Municipality of Kočani, Vladko Grozdanov, addressed the audience, along with representatives from the Delegation of the European Union, the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany, the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) and Makedonski Telekom. A Memorandum of Cooperation was signed between GIZ and the Municipality of Kočani, followed by the official activation of the WiFi network.
Andonovski announced that Kočani will soon receive a new Service Centre and that the Ministry continues with activities and projects that will accelerate the digital transformation at the local level, with a focus on tangible benefits for citizens and municipalities across the entire country.
